Master Keys – Keyed A like – Same Keys – Key Levels

One of the most common turns when it comes to locks is, keyed alike and keyed to differ. Keyed to differ means each lock has its own key, You can not use the key for one lock to open another. Keyed alike means the locks are set to the same key, one key and will open all locks.

When it comes to keys, a lot of people have heard about master keys. A master key is a key that can work more then one lock. The terms master key can also mean “the highest key” in the key system. We will give you some examples to help explain more about master keys.

If you have more then one lock and you would like them all to be on the same key, this can be done. You will then have one key to operate all your locks. This type of lock changing is called keyed alike. People often refer to the one key as a master key, and the locks are often referred to as master keyed. Most locksmith refer to this as Keyed alike, and would call the key a common key or KA key, short for keyed alike.

The next level would be a master key system. This is where you have 10 locks for example and you would like them all to operate on the one key. We can also include access levels in this master key system. For example If you have 10 locks and your master key works all , But you have a cleaner and their key will only work 2 locks , And you also have another person who you wish to give a key to to work 8 of the 10 lock, This can be done. This is called a master key system.
