Locksmith and locksmithing is a unique trade that has been around 100s of years, in the past 100 years locksmiths and locksmithing has changed. In the old days locksmiths would build  their own locks which would be a complex piece of metal with a unique puzzle type appearance that would give the lock its security, the more complex puzzle or unique the shape the more security the lock would have. All keys cut in the early days were cut by hand and the locks were also made by hand.

These days locksmiths have a machine for everything, majority of the machines are computerised and very precise compared to how it was 100 years ago. Locksmiths have the ability to reproduce and make parts quicker and more precise than ever before, but because it is cheaper to have parts produced in a factory and keys produced in a factory, hand carved and handmade keys with decorative shapes have become a thing of the past. Today locksmiths have it a lot easier than locksmiths a hundred years ago, when a locksmith now duplicates a key you can simply place the blank key into a machine push a few buttons and the machine will cut the key accurately and quickly. Keep duplication is relatively simple, with some of the machines you simply need to load the key and the original key and the machine will carve out the grooves the key. This process generally takes less than 1 min compared with locksmiths 100 years ago who would spend hour’s just reproducing one key. Handmade locks are a thing of the past, with a locks being produced from China and other countries extremely cheap there is no need any more to produce locks by hand locks by hand

Today locksmiths are producing keys with computer chips inside the head of the key, locksmiths are also producing keys with a transponder chips inside the head of the key. This type of computerised key sends a signal to a computer authorise access as well as still being a physical key that has the shape of the key and also has two be suited to the lock.

Keys coming all different shapes and sizes and level of security, but today keys are nowhere near as fancy a nice looking at some of the elaborate patterns and nicely shaped pieces of metal that they use to make 100 years.

To be a locksmith 100 years ago you must have to be good with metalwork in particular brass and mild steel. Today’s locksmith still needs to have metalworking skills but locksmiths also need computer skills to work with computer chips for some of the higher security keys. The locksmithing skills have increased and become more difficult in some areas, and of course the craftsmanship with metalwork has decreased because of the machines that are available and are computerised key machines which are commonly used in locksmithing industry today.

A few common factors of the locksmithing industry that has remained constant over the past 100 hundred years is people still use keys and people still lose keys every day.
